As an NYC moving company, we know what it’s like to survive the elements. We’ve been moving New Yorkers through every weather pattern you could imagine since we started in 1948. Here are some of our favorite post-blizzard tips we’ve accrued to help you prioritize what to do once the skies have dumped an enormous amount of snow on you.
Especially if you’ve just moved to the East Coast – what a welcome!
Ensure that all vents have been cleared for your safety. If a furnace is clogged, it may shut down or work incorrectly, producing poisonous carbon monoxide.
Replace old batteries if necessary, and if they still are not working, call 311 for assistance.
Cold ashes store heat and can be hazardous. Put them in a metal can away from the house.
If you discover any, shut off your water until you can get someone to repair them.
Don’t approach them! Make sure that you contact the power company.
It’s cold out there – make sure that you and your family (and pets too!) are all bundled up. Especially mid-shoveling, you may get hot and want to remove clothing, but that will do more harm than good.
So many people severely hurt their backs every snowstorm by shoveling incorrectly. Trigger your leg muscles when dealing with the heavy load. Also, don’t fill up your shovel if it’s too much to handle. Shoveling is an extremely strenuous activity – take breaks when needed.
